WHY THE SLIM IS MY CHOICE....

Nairobi kenya, the weathers looking good today, but be warned of its multiple personality disposition ,either way i got my slim on.If you were born after the 60s,(most of you are...) you might have seen the evidence of this trend on the popular TV show 'Mad Men', set in 1960s America. Its costume has inspired many designers to ditch wide ties in favor of thinner versions. This past summer, we have witnessed designers such as Prada, Gucci and saville row, to name a few, all showcasing their skinny neckwear . Celebrities such as Jude Law, Brad Pitt and David Beckham are all choosing skinny neckties. It is true that it's all down to personal taste and being fashion savvy is not everyone's cup of tea, but the skinny tie is a classic in its own right, and will always carry an air of distinction....

THE IMPOSSIBLE COOL...

Have you noticed lately that things have started to trim up? The 2010 budget. Political corruption bribes . And even the cut of your tie. That’s right, the quintessential male staple has finally had a makeover. Go to any hip nightclub in Nairobi and I guarantee you’ll see dudes wearing what appears to be an anorexic tie. The fashion scene isn’t resistant to fads as feeble as this.
Prior to a couple years ago, you’d be appalled to find a tie that was narrower than 3.75 inches at the widest part.  So does that mean you can just go out and buy the new “skinny” tie and fit in on the Magnificent Mile? Not quite.
Clothing is a lot like the architecture on Street: it’s about balance and visual proportions. Thus, rocking a skinny tie with your Armani  suit from two years ago isn’t going to work out. Why you ask? Because the lapels on your suit coat probably measure 3 inches or wider and the thin tie is lost in between; there's no balance.
In  perfect semblance, the widest part of your lapel should match the widest part of your tie. Therefore, if you want to catch this trend and not look like a victim of fashion marketing, you’ll need to update the suits as well. Pull it off correctly, and you might just earn some style at only KSHS 300 at Sir bradleys....

BEST KNOT FOR A SKINNY..

Typically it is the goal to tie a tie knot so that the tie hangs straight, and that the knot itself is either symmetric (for the full Windsor tie knot), or has the popular dimple (best suited for the Four in Hand tie knot). For skinny ties, it is preferred to have a “non-perfect tie knot”. Instead the knot should be slightly loose. The tie also doesn’t have to hang straight, and instead of one dimple, multiple crinkles at the knot are preferred.

The best suited tie knot for skinny ties is the simple and most common tie know: The Four in Hand knot. The four in Hand knot is the oldest tie knot that originally was invented in Britain dueing the end of the 19th Century. Ever since, the Four in Hand is the most commly ted knot for ties - regualr sized ties, skinny ties, or even extra long ties.

The reason the four in Hand tie knot is so popular is because it is first of all quite simple to master. In fact it is often times referred to as the simple knot. In additon it is a tie knot that simply looks best for tradtionally striped ties such as British Regimental stripes ties. It is also a preferred knot when wearing a shirt with a more narrow collar spread.

WHO WEARS SKINNY TIES..

The retro look of narrow neckties is a sought after look by many younger men. This group of men wears the skinny tie not as a formal piece of accessory - the traditional use of the tie. Instead, the skinny tie gets combined with jeans, and a dress shirt with rolled up sleeves and top collar open. The tie knot is also not a knot one would tie for the business occasion. When worn with casual clothes, the tie knot on the skinny tie is also more on the “laid back” side: Slightly loose, non-symmetrical, and with multiple dimples that have a closer resemblance to unwanted crinkles than a perfect tie knot dimple.

Music scene and narrow ties:

The skinny necktie is quite popular for many genres of music: From alternative EMO bands like “My Chemical Romance” to pop music stars such as Justin Timberlake, the skinny tie is an often picked piece of clothing. The way the narrow tie is worn however is a little different. Alternative rock bands typically resemble more the look of the 50s combined with the “rock star” life style found in the 80s. Pop music on the other hand usually focuses more on the current collection of brand name designers. For many designers skinny neckties are part of the collection.

Celebrities and skinny ties:

Amoung celebrities, the skinny necktie has become a poluar choice for red carpet events. For traditional balack tie attire, the skinny necktie is unsuited. Instead stick with a black bow tie, tuxedo and white pocket square. Most celebrities choose the solid color black necktie either made from fine silk or even leather.

Skinny ties and more can be attributed to the resurgence of 80′s influenced fashion trends including the bubble skirt and asymmetrical zippers, but like many of the 80′s trends, the roots are back in the 1950′s.
Skinny ties go back to the 1950’s Ratpack and their super mod coolness.
Originally worn and copied by such 1950′s legends like the ratpack, it became a fixture of the mods before it was absorbed by the new wave and punk rockers of the 1980′s. I know I have quite a few embrassing pictures from high school dances! Back again, the skinny tie now says more than just cool; it’s elegant, sophisticated, driven, yet relaxed and casual and that’s why it is back with a vengeance.

History of skinny ties

When talking about the popular skinny tie, most people think about the retro look resembling the 60s. The skinny tie was made popular through pop icons like the Beatles during the end of the 50s.

Before the 1950s, ties from the 40s were much much wider, in fact the really wide ties (above 4.25 inches at the widest part) didn’t come back in style until the 80s. Eventually, the skinny tie came out of style during the end of the 60s and fashion designers slowly went with wider necktie cuts. By the 70s the average necktie measured about 3 inches in width, which is still narrow compared to our standard necktie of today (about 3.5″). The classic vintage skinny tie from the late 50s measures between 2 and 2.5 inches in width.
The materials used to make the skinny tie varies widely. Some designers had solid colored black skinny ties made from leather, while otheres carried ties that were knitted from cotton and even wool. Knitted skinny ties usually had a flat tip. Even today knitted version of the skinny tie are back in style -
